Dentistry Focused on Whole Body Health and Wellness

Most dental visits focus on teeth. An airway-focused dentist goes further, evaluating how the structure of your child’s mouth and jaws affects their breathing, sleep quality, and overall development.

Dr. Kathleen Schuster considers whether mouth breathing, snoring, teeth grinding, or restless sleep may signal an underdeveloped upper or lower jaw, a root cause that traditional dentistry often overlooks. Our approach looks at the whole picture: growth trajectories, sleep patterns, oral structure, tongue function, and breathing mechanics, to build a plan that supports healthy breathing for life.

Signs of Sleep-Disordered Breathing in Children

Many symptoms parents chalk up to personality, allergies, or childhood phases are the body’s way of signaling that it isn’t getting the oxygen it needs. Breathing through a restricted airway is like sipping through a narrow straw; your child may be working harder for every breath than their body should ever have to. Over time, this affects development in ways that are often overlooked until the pattern is hard to reverse. If your child experiences several of these regularly, an airway evaluation may offer the clarity your family has been searching for:

Why Nasal Breathing Changes Everything

The nose was purpose-built for breathing. When children breathe through their noses, as nature intended, the body receives oxygen more efficiently, and the airway develops in healthier patterns.

Filters & Protects

Nasal passages filter dust, allergens, and airborne particles before they reach the lungs, protecting the respiratory system with every breath.

Warms & Humidifies

Air is warmed and humidified as it passes through the nose, supporting optimal oxygen exchange and reducing stress on the airways and lungs.

Produces Nitric Oxide

Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide, a compound that improves oxygen circulation, supports healthy blood vessels, and enhances immune function.

Your Child's Airway Journey at Magnolia Ridge Dentistry

We believe clarity is a form of care. From your first visit, you’ll have a clear roadmap, so every appointment has a purpose, and every milestone is celebrated.

A comprehensive new patient visit that includes a thorough health history review, validated sleep questionnaire, and diagnostic imaging. Dr. Schuster evaluates airway structure and development, then walks you through her findings and presents a personalized treatment recommendation, along with any specialist referrals she believes are important to the plan. All scans and images are valid for 30 days.

Because many out-of-state families travel to start care, we structure our initial appointments to allow treatment to begin the same day when possible, maximizing your time and minimizing the need for additional early travel.

The next in-person visit typically falls 5 to 6 weeks after the initial consultation, once your child’s custom appliances or treatment components are ready. We work to make each return visit as efficient as possible without compromising the precision of care.

Every child’s treatment timeline is unique. Throughout care, we schedule in-person appointments at key developmental milestones to monitor growth, make precise adjustments, and ensure everything is unfolding as intended. Between visits, our team is available to support you remotely so you never feel alone in the process.

When we see the improvements in sleep, breathing, and development that this work was designed to create, we take the time to acknowledge how far your child has come. This is the moment every family’s journey is working toward!

Airway Treatment Options for Children

No two children are alike. Dr. Schuster designs a treatment plan based on your child’s unique anatomy, age, and development, with a focus on root-cause results rather than just symptom management.

Ideal for children beginning at age 3, this appliance guides jaw development and promotes nasal breathing through consistent wear for a few hours during the day and overnight during sleep. It supports natural growth and may significantly reduce symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing.

The palate is both the roof of your child’s mouth and the floor of their nasal passage. Expansion therapy  gently widens the upper and lower arches to improve nasal airflow, support balanced jaw growth, and create space for permanent teeth, using stable protocols for lasting results.

Beyond straightening teeth, clear aligners can address jaw development concerns that limit tongue space, a key factor in healthy breathing patterns and airway function during sleep.

A customized program of exercises that retrains the tongue and facial muscles to support proper breathing, swallowing, chewing, and speech. Research consistently supports its role in improving airway health and reducing relapse after structural treatment.

A restrictive lingual frenulum can limit tongue mobility and drive compensatory patterns that worsen airway dysfunction. When indicated, a gentle laser procedure combined with myofunctional therapy can restore proper function and support long-term results.

Airway health is rarely one-dimensional. Dr. Schuster coordinates referrals to ENT specialists, sleep medicine physicians, myofunctional therapists, and other trusted providers to ensure your child receives truly comprehensive care.

Airway FAQ

A traditional dentist evaluates teeth. An airway-focused dentist evaluates how the structure of the mouth and jaws affects breathing, sleep, and overall health. Dr. Schuster evaluates whether symptoms such as snoring, grinding, mouth breathing, or restless sleep could signal an underdeveloped jaw or a restricted airway, and designs treatment to address the root cause rather than just the surface presentation.

The earlier, the better, but it is never too late. Certain treatments, such as the removable habit corrector, are most effective when started at age 3, when the jaws are most adaptable. That said, Dr. Schuster works with children of all ages and tailors treatment to each child’s current developmental stage. If you have noticed signs of sleep-disordered breathing, trust your instinct and schedule an evaluation.

Treatment timelines vary based on your child’s age, developmental stage, and the nature of the airway restriction. During your consultation, Dr. Schuster will outline clear goals and provide a personalized estimate, so you can feel confident and informed before committing to a treatment plan. Growth takes time, but consistent, small shifts produce lasting transformation.

With consistent compliance, including nasal hygiene habits, appliance wear, and myofunctional exercises, many families begin noticing visible changes in bite and alignment within 3 to 6 months. Between 6 and 9 months, parents often report meaningful improvements in sleep quality, breathing patterns, and behavior. We track progress through regular questionnaires and check-ins, so you always have a clear picture of where your child is in the journey.

Home compliance is one of the most important factors in the success of airway treatment. Depending on the plan, this may include consistent appliance wear, daily myofunctional therapy exercises, nasal hygiene practices, and attention to habits like mouth breathing during the day. Dr. Schuster and our team will walk you through everything in detail and be available to support you between appointments.

Every child is different, and treatment timelines vary accordingly. While we thoughtfully structure care to minimize unnecessary visits, multiple in-person appointments are essential throughout treatment to monitor growth, make precise adjustments, and ensure everything is progressing as intended.

Typically, the first return visit for out-of-state families is the appliance delivery appointment, approximately 5 to 6 weeks after the initial consultation. From the beginning, we provide a clear roadmap so your family can plan with confidence.

Yes. We offer a virtual pre-consultation option for out-of-state families who want to connect with our team before committing to travel. This is an opportunity to share your child’s history, ask questions, and determine whether an in-person evaluation is the right next step. Please note that a full diagnostic assessment, including imaging, requires an in-person visit.

Yes. Tongue-tie, a restrictive lingual frenulum, can significantly impact tongue mobility, oral development, and breathing patterns.

If Dr. Schuster identifies a tethered oral tissue that is contributing to your child’s airway concerns, she may recommend a gentle laser release combined with myofunctional therapy to restore proper function. Not every child requires this, but it is always assessed as part of the comprehensive evaluation.

Coverage for airway-focused dental treatment varies widely by plan and provider. Our team is happy to discuss financial options and help you understand what may apply to your child’s care. We encourage you to reach out before your visit so we can help you prepare.

Please bring any prior dental, orthodontic, sleep study, or ENT evaluation records, if available. A completed health history form and any notes or videos documenting your child’s sleep habits (snoring, mouth breathing, restlessness) can be especially helpful for Dr. Schuster’s assessment. Our team will send a preparation checklist after booking.
